We have signed a joint letter to the Government

January 16, 2025

We have signed a joint letter to the Government, written by the National Women's Justice Coalition, along with 48 other organisations.

There is a false and damaging assumption that prisons provide a 'place of safety' for women living with trauma, housing problems and drug and alcohol use. Instead, community solutions like women's centres, are the answer to reducing offending and breaking cycles of trauma and harm.

What is the Women’s Justice Board and why is it important?

In December 2024, Labour MP Shabana Mahmood announced that the Labourgovernment planned to launch a new Women’s Justice Board. The goal of the Boardis to reduce the number of women sent to prison, as well as the number ofwomen’s prisons.

This is an important moment for women and girls involved in the criminaljustice system.

The letter outlines a vision, recommendations and expectations of the newWomen’s Justice Board so that it creates a new and effective approach tosupporting women and girls involved in the criminal justice system.

We hope the letter will influence and shape the Women’s Justice Board andreduce the number of women in prison.
