Our statement on the terrorism against racially minoritised communities across the UK.

August 7, 2024

Like so many of us, we are appalled at the murder of three young girls in Southport last week whose lives were stolen by a violent man.

We feel continuous grief for all lives that are continually taken and devastated by the actions of perpetrators who choose to commit violence against women and girls.

We utterly condemn what we have witnessed across the country in the week since; racist and anti-Muslim weaponising of the Southport violence to fuel terrorism against racially minoritised communities, including Muslims and those seeking safety in this country.

Male violence against women and girls cannot be used to justify further male violence, misogyny and racism.

These perpetrators are making an active choice to cause harm and they alone bear responsibility.

We recognise this is not a new problem and that racism, Islamophobia, hatred towards migrant people have long caused fear, division and pain.

Black and minoritized women and migrant women in particular are harmed by both racism and misogyny.

As an organisation, we recognise our responsibility to continue sustained action when it comes to anti-racist practice and offering safe spaces for Black and minoritised women and migrant women.

We stand in solidarity with our sisters and friends based in Plymouth, Weymouth and across the country who have had to respond to violence within their communities.

We have also taken the decision to delete our Twitter/X account in response to the comments made by the CEO this week and the ongoing platforming of racists and misogynists who are using it to organise terrorism.

In solidarity,

The Women’s Centre Cornwall
